Weekly Reports

Presidents John's Report

President John welcomed our guest speaker, PDG Rob Woolley and visitors.  He announced the passing of Dawn Langtry, wife of honorary life member Jol Langtry.  Kingsley gave a brief synopsis of Dawn and Jol’s involvement as a Charter member with Hall Rotary and in particular the publication of a book of research papers on Salinity in the Yass River Catchment. This was a major Club undertaking at the time that was designed to highlight the problems with worsening farmland salinity in our region.

John then reported on the key outcomes from the recent Board meeting. The Board has finalised this year’s Avenues of Service budget which includes allocations of $30,000 to International, $35,000 to Community and $78,500 to Youth and Vocational ($25,000 general, $45,000 scholarships programme and $8,500 for the exchange student programme). We have also committed $50,000 to the Southcare Helicopter Service and $5,000 to the Rotary Foundation. This is a total budgeted expenditure of $198,500 to benefit both local and international communities.

The President announced that Yvonne Robson has withdrawn from her intended position as International Service Director for 2016-17 due to her election as President Nominee for 2017-18. This is in response to an intent to “spread the load” more broadly in the Club and provide opportunity for others to become involved in a Club management role.  Those who have not previously served on the Board are particularly encouraged to nominate for the position. Secretary Cynthia will advise a date for a Special General Meeting to elect a member to fill the position in the near future.

The issue of gifts to the Club was discussed and the Board determined that all gifts should be declared to the Board and the Board would determine their status and destination.

Secretary Cynthia has received several Paul Harris Fellow nominations and Charter members were asked to form a panel and determine any awards to be made this year. The Club has adequate funds in credit to fund all nominations received to date.

Youth:

Janine reported:

• Se have 3 UC Scholarship students; Kelsey, Meg and Larissa.

• Brad, in his 2nd year of the scholarship has decided to withdraw from UC and will be studying Law at Macquarie University –  which he cant do at UC. So this has been a successful result.

• District have requested that we support another Youth Exchange student - the Board have agreed that if we have families and a counselor that are prepared to put in the work that we will take on another international student.

International:

• ROMAC - Last week $2,000 was donated to ROMAC.

• Abundant Water - Some weeks ago Yvonne provided a 'heads-up' that the management of the Abundant Water project was going to be transferred from Hall RC to RC Jerrabomberra. This transfer was effected 11 May. Over the past three years Hall has donated a total of $25,000 to the Abundant Water project for the development and the implementation of sanitised water in areas of rural Laos.   As some local Laotians have now been trained the Abundant Water project is expanding to Vietnam.  This has been a very worthy project that we can be proud of playing a part in.
