Last Tuesday we celebrated the club’s 26th birthday with a honey theme.
Most club members dressed in black and yellow to add to the celebratory atmosphere. It was all a great surprise for our guest speaker Mitch Pearce from Canberra Urban Honey. Mitch had recently returned from the world’s biggest Apiarists conference in South Korea, but co-incidentally, his birthday was on the same night!
Mitch gave us a very interesting talk on his experiences at the conference. He was very grateful for the support the club in assisting him financially to attend the conference. Canberra Urban Honey is an offshoot of Honey Delight which you will find at our markets on Saturday mornings.
Mitch’s family have been beekeepers and honey producers since 1923. The idea behind Canberra Urban Honey is to re-populate Canberra with honey bees by creating and managing micro apiaries throughout the city using a ‘Hive Host’ system wherein hives are put in people’s suburban back yards and the family manage the hives and the family hosting the hive gets to enjoy the bees which pollinate their garden. So it is a win win for all concerned.
A most interesting and enjoyable evening was topped off with birthday cake for desert.
